How To Sell a Bitcoin Name Service (BNS) Domain

Looking to sell your BNS / .btc domain? You’re in the right place. In this guide, we’ll show you how to sell your .btc name and cover some FAQs.

Because BNS names are not standard SIP-009 NFTs on the Stacks Network, they can be a bit tricky to deal with. For example, you are limited to holding one name per wallet address.

There wasn’t even a marketplace for BNS and .btc names until 2022, so most trades were done via escrow.

In this guide, we’ll be using Gamma, the largest and best NFT marketplace on the Stacks Network.

How to Sell Your .btc Domain on Gamma

Step 1: Sign in to Gamma

Navigate to Gamma and choose Connect wallet -> Stacks. Then log in with your Stacks wallet.

Make sure to log in with the address that holds your .btc or other BNS domain name that you want to sell.

If you don’t already have a .btc domain name, you can learn how to register one here: how to register a .btc name. You will also need around 1 STX to pay for the listing transaction fees.

Step 2: Navigate to your profile page

Click the profile icon to navigate to your profile page.

When you get to your profile page, scroll down to “collected” and locate your .btc or other BNS domain name.

You may need to use the search feature to locate your domain name if you have a large number of NFTs.

Step 3: Set a price for your .btc domain and list it for sale.

Hover over your domain name’s card until “List” appears.

Click it.

You will be asked to set a price, and Gamma will show you your potential profit after their 3.5% market fee.

Click the “List” button.

Make sure to double check the price you set. Then confirm the listing with your Stacks wallet.

After confirming, you just need to wait.

The transaction will typically go through in 10 minutes or less, but it may take longer depending on when the next Bitcoin block is mined and how congested the Stacks Network is.

Step 4: Wait for the listing transaction to go through

You can check the block explorer while waiting for the transaction to be confirmed. To do that, just click the pending transaction you approved from your wallet application, and you’ll be taken to the block explorer.

As soon as the transaction status changes from “in mempool” or “pending” to “confirmed,” your BNS domain listing is live!

If you go back to Gamma, you should now see it for sale.

You can now forward this page to anyone who might be interested in purchasing your name.

Anyone who searches for it on Gamma will also see it listed for sale.

If you want, you can change the price of your .btc / BNS name or unlist it from the same page.

Step 5: Wait for your domain to sell (optional: promote it)

You can either wait for your .btc / BNS domain name to sell organically, or you can promote it to speed up the process.

For example:

  • Share it in the BNS Community Discord server.
  • Tweet that you’re selling it.
  • DM anyone on Twitter who might be interested in purchasing it.

It may take a while to sell or not sell at all, depending on how desirable your .btc domain name is and how active the market is.

If it does sell, it will be automatically transferred to the new owner, and you will receive payment in your Stacks wallet.

If you want to be notified if it sells, there is also an option on Gamma for email notifications.

How to get an email notification when your BNS / .btc domain name sells

Go to your Gamma account page and enter an email address to be notified when your BNS /.btc domain name sells.

Then scroll down and make sure to hit the checkbox for “Sales” under “Notification Type.”

Don’t forget to save!
